Landcare NT to deliver $3.82 million Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways Project

Blog | 9 Oct 2023 |

Landcare NT and the National Landcare Network have welcomed the recent announcement of a $3.82 million investment in landcare for the Darwin Harbour Catchment Waterways Project, part of the Australian Government Urban Rivers and Catchment Program.

Led by Landcare NT, in partnership with local community landcare groups and Larrakia Nation, this project will support community-wide action in the Territory to restore habitat and improve water quality in the priority areas of Rapid Creek, Ludmilla Creek, Sandy Creek (within Casuarina Coastal Reserve), and Mitchell Creek sub-catchments over the next four years.

“This fantastic investment by government will support the expansion of landcarers’ critical work on local waterways here in the Territory,” said Emily Raso, Landcare NT Executive Officer.

“In the face of a changing climate there is significant work that needs to be done to improve the health of our waterways, increase their resilience and further engage the community to actively take part in preserving our creeks, rivers, and catchments.

“Landcarers here in the Territory are ready and willing to do the work and are excited to work with a range of partners to restore the natural environments along these riparian corridors,” said Ms Raso.

Guided by the expertise of local ecology and flora and fauna experts and Larrakia traditional land and water management groups, Landcare NT, local community landcare groups and a wide network of volunteers will engage in on-ground activities including weed and fire management, revegetation and rehabilitation, erosion management, and gross and stormwater pollutant and litter management.

Facilitating community education and participation will also be a key to all activities in the Project, with Landcare NT hoping that the work will grow community engagement and enjoyment of their local environment and waterways across the catchment.
